Digital Web Magazine - Web Design - Web Guru

This week, Digital Web’s own Nick Finck sat down with the Web Standards Project’s Aarron Walter, to talk education, findability, and the path to lasting happiness.

Aral Balkan talks to Digital Web about the conference: an experiment in online communities. Bringing a collection of varied and insightful speakers from around the globe to thousands of attendees without even stepping outside.

You’ll often be told that the gallery sites are one of the first places to turn to for inspiration—but, while they can reveal the current trends in blog design, they don’t tell the whole story. For true inspiration—and a touch of education—Kimberly Elam took a look instead at how the super-successful approach the design of their own websites.

2008 has been a quiet year for good web design and development books. The standout thus far is Luke Wroblewski’s “Web Form Design”, published by Rosenfeld Media, both in terms of content and design. Digital Web’s own Matthew Pennell reviews “Web Form Design” and finds LukeW’s design thinking far outshines focusing on the humble web form.

When you think of the people who use your website, where do they use it? At work or a home office? What about a mobile phone? What about even more diverse devices like Amazon's Kindle or the Nintendo Wii? Dave Shea asks us to reconsider how and where people use our websites, and how best to tackle the demands of building sites for a wide array of devices.

Doug Bowman, one of the most important designers on the web, hasn’t spoken at a conference in quite a while. He’s coming out of retirement now to speak at the upcoming, not-to-be-missed Web Directions North conference. For this special Digital Web interview, John Allsopp sat down with Doug to discuss what Doug has been up to, what he thinks the most exciting developments have been on the web in the past year, where he hopes to see the power of the web used in the future, and what he’d like to explore at Web Directions North.

Joe Gillespie, retired Web pioneer and multimedia fine artist, gets the Dave Linabury treatment in a candid interview that takes us from ASCII animations in the ’60s to $2 microchips in electronic art pieces of the future.

Cameron Moll shares his thoughts on design challenges and inspiration, the parallel philosophies of design and music, and the perils of not differentiating your work.

Jeffrey Zeldman was introduced to the web in 1995 and since then he's become one the web's most respected voices. Although, working on the Batman Forever website introduced him to the web, and his site Jeffrey Zeldman Presents gave him recognition in the web development community. It's his active involvement and contribution to the web over the last four years that has garnered him praise--not only online, but also in traditional media. His interviews can be found all over the web and his sites, like A List Apart and the Web Standards Project, have become important resources for designers of all levels. Jeffrey took some time from his busy schedule to answer some questions we posed. His next public appearance will be as keynote speaker at Web Design Denver '99.
